These antique small collectable tokens tell a fascinating tale of an idea Scots treasured for centuries.
They were produced between 1720 to 1850s Made of a mixture of lead and tin, the tokens were given by a Church Elder to grant entry to the Lords' Supper (communion).
Given on the Saturday before Church these tokens served as a physical representation of a members adherence to the churches doctrines and proper conduct.
Later seen as judgemental and unfashionable tokens gave way to communion cards and a lot more liberal approach to admission to the sacraments.
The front of the coin reads FREE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND 1843 and on the reverse is a Bible Verse from Corinthians LET A MAN EXAMINE HIMSELF. A small piece of Scottish History.
